U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) introduced a bipartisan bill in June to help schools and colleges cover the costs of protecting students and educators from COVID-19. The Reopen Schools Safely Act (S.4081) establishes a federal grant program at the U.S. Department of Education to help school districts and colleges reopen this fall. School districts and colleges will have flexibility to use the grant funds for any expense needed to meet Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, state, and local guidelines for mitigating the spread of COVID-19. The bill has been read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
