Increasing the dialogue among stakeholders in New Jersey’s special education system

This spring, U.S. Representative Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) introduced bipartisan legislation to support students’ positive development and academic success through social and emotional learning. The Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning Act of 2013 (HR 1875) would expand the availability of evidence-based programs that teach students social and emotional skills such as self-control, goal setting, collaboration, conflict resolution, and problem-solving. More than two decades of scientific research has shown these skills to improve academic achievement and promote positive school climate. The bill identifies core areas of social and emotional competence and amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) to allow funding for teacher and principal training and professional development to be used for SEL programming.
