Increasing the dialogue among stakeholders in New Jersey’s special education system

Capitol Building iconUnder a measure introduced in the New Jersey Legislature (A-381), parents, grandparents, and guardians of a child attending school or childcare would be allowed to take up to 40 hours a year off from work, in order to participate in school-related activities. The legislation specifically mentions attendance at meetings regarding the special education needs of the child.

Employees would be required to give reasonable notice of the planned absence and any requested documentation of the participation. Employees would be permitted to use paid vacation, personal leave, or compensatory time for purposes of the planned absence, or take unpaid time off.
