Increasing the dialogue among stakeholders in New Jersey’s special education system

New legislation in Washington, DC would help ensure that students with disabilities have the information they need to choose the right college and get the supports they need to be successful.

Respond, Innovate, Succeed and Empower (RISE), S.1585, would amend the Higher Education Act and require that students who have documentation of a disability can continue to use that same documentation when they enter higher education. The measure would eliminate the need for students who have received special education services to undergo additional diagnostic testing, which can be very expensive and time-consuming.

The legislation would increase transparency of school policies and data so that students with disabilities can best identify a college that meets their needs. And, the bill calls for the federal government to provide technical assistance to guide colleges and universities on how to serve those with disabilities.

In addition to Casey, the RISE Act was introduced by Sens. Todd Young (R-IN), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and Maggie Hassan (D-NH).
