A bill moving through the New Jersey legislature would require boards of education to provide special education, transition services, and related services to certain students exceeding the age of eligibility for special education and related services.
The bill would help students scheduled to graduate this spring (2021), as well as those who would turn 21 in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Specific goals, objectives, and services would be determined by the IEP team, which includes the parent. The bill would prevent many parents from having to file for mediation or due process in order to get compensatory education for a student who would otherwise age out.
As Common Ground sends, the bill has passed the NJ Senate and is awaiting a vote by the Assembly Education Committee. It enjoys broad bipartisan support.
