Increasing the dialogue among stakeholders in New Jersey’s special education system

The U.S. Departments of Education and Health and Human Services have issued guidance to states, school districts, and early childhood providers urging them to take action to include more children with disabilities into inclusive high-quality early childhood programs. The policy statement issued last fall urges states to establish policies and task forces to promote inclusion, set and track goals and consider reallocating funding, among other steps.

As of 2013, more than half of preschoolers with disabilities accessed special education services in segregated settings.
