Increasing the dialogue among stakeholders in New Jersey’s special education system

Capitol Icon - From the CapitolsGovernor Phil Murphy has conditionally approved a law that would establish a special unit within the Office of Administrative Law to handle matters of special education disputes and disagreements. The bill (S.2160, sponsored by Senator Steve Sweeney, quickly passed both houses. Governor added language designed to ensure the proper and efficient operation of the new unit. Because the OAL will require a significant increase in staffing levels, he recommended revisions to delay the bill’s effective date to coincide with the appointment and confirmation of a minimum of fifteen new Administrative Law Judges and the necessary support personnel.
