Increasing the dialogue among stakeholders in New Jersey’s special education system

Nearly 3,400 caregivers were asked about their responsibilities and their concerns. Here is what they said

  1. 95% said they were stressed out.
  2. Parents report spending, on average, 57 hours a week feeding, dressing, providing behavior support and managing finances as they related the the person with a disability.
  3. 25% of caregivers said their loved on is on a waiting list for government funded support services.
  4. Nearly 2/3 of caregivers have paid work in addition to their duties as caregivers.
  5. 43% of caregivers have had to take a leave of absence from work.
  6. 33% of caregivers have turned down a promotion due to their duties as caregivers.
  7. 55% have had to cut back hours due to their duties as caregivers.
  8. 67% report out-of pocket expenses of $5000 or more, with 17% reporting spending more than $10,000 out-of-pocket on expenses related to their family member’s disabilities.

Results from: Family & Individual Needs for Disability Supports (FINDS) Community Report released by The Arc and The University of Minnesota’s Institute on Community Integration. Findings are based on responses from 3,398 unpaid caregivers across the country that responded to an online survey conducted between January and April 2017.
