Increasing the dialogue among stakeholders in New Jersey’s special education system
  1. Just 20 percent of students diagnosed with mental disorders receive the mental-health services they need.
  2. More than 45 percent of K-12 students have had three or more adverse childhood experiences. According to research, these experiences impact learning and behavior.
  3. An estimated 32 percent of adolescents have an anxiety disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
  4. Twelve percent of youth between the ages of 12 and 17 report having experienced one major depressive episode in the past year, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
  5. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in teens ages 15-19. Since 2007, the suicide rate among teenagers has gone up 30 percent among 15- to 19-year-old boys and doubled among girls, according to data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  6. The national average is one school psychologist to 1,700 students, with some districts having as few as one per 6,000 students, according to NASP.
  7. NASP recommends a ratio of one school psychologist for every 500 to 700 students.
